Reflexology is one of the oldest holistic health practices known to the world and has even been documented in hieroglyphics dating back 5000 years. With its use people knew that their lives and the lives of their loved ones could be improved. So most people today want to know what it will do for them and how it works. According to the American Reflexology Certification Board the three primary benefits of reflexology are:
Reflexology is the science based on the principles that each part of the feet, hands, and ears are related to every organ, gland, and body part. As the feet, hands, and or ears are worked on with finger pressure and thumb walking, the energy pathways in the body unblock allowing the body to heal itself. Typically a Reflexologist will work on your feet because the effect is more pronounced and your body tends to be more relaxed at the end of a session; a truly good Reflexologist though will be able to work on your hands and ears with great results as well if you are uncomfortable with your feet being touched at the beginning. A trained Reflexologist can even discover energetic blocks you may be unaware of! Through the action of finger pressure and thumb walking the Reflexologist can sense energetic blocks which may manifest as swelling, knots, or tenderness in the feet. Even simple issues, such as daily stress or the common cold can be reflected in the feet. A trained Reflexologist will be able to work on the reflexes of those issues on the feet and the hands. Reflexology has been known to help with weight loss, headaches, high blood pressure, incontinence, infertility, arthritis, sinuses and even a temporary illness such as a cold, flu, or throat infection. The number of conditions that reflexology has been known to help with is much more vast and speaking to a Reflexologist is the best way to determine if this treatment might help you. Reflexology in Businesses! Businesses that have brought Reflexology into their offices and to their employees have found reduced absenteeism, improved productivity, increased employee morale, enhanced focus, reduced repetitive motion injuries and bolstered client relations. Is this practice being shared or taught in my area? With the health care sector being the largest growing industry in the United States and people recognizing holistic health practices as wonderful alternatives to “traditional” Western medicine, reflexology is a growing industry offering people choices in their quest for better health. The Maryland Kinesiology and Wellness Institute is one center that is expanding its business to meet the ever growing demands for holistic health care practices. The director, Karen Beleck, not only practices reflexology and other holistic practices in the greater Baltimore area, but serves as the Traveling Director of the Baltimore School of Reflexology and travels to teach in other states. She teaches certification courses to people looking to enter into the holistic health care sector. (Information Compiled and Written by Nicole Beus, Marketing Director for MDKWI 2007c)
